Run, Fred, Run!

I want to see Fred Thompson as president just to see the meeting between him and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.  Fred is so much taller he could use Mahmoud to rest his martini on.

President Ford, 1913-2006

I don’t know of a president who faced a tougher situation than Gerald Ford did when he stepped into the presidency (except perhaps Andrew Johnson).  He had to deal with Watergate, the pull-out of Vietnam, the on-going energy crisis and détente with the Soviet Union.  I was only about 12 when Ford became president and not all that politically aware.  I do remember Ford not being very popular in my house.  My parents were not happy that he pardoned Nixon.  I was just relieved not to be hearing about Watergate anymore.  In retrospect I know that Ford did a great thing for the country when he pardoned Nixon.  Watergate was probably our lowest point since the Civil War.  Ford's Presidential pardon of his predecessor lifted the country's burdern, helped us to move on and enabled us to come together to celebrate our Bicentennial.

Ford isn't a president I really thought much about in recent years, mainly because he didn't seek the limelight.  He spent the last 30 years largely under-appreciated, but it turns out history's been kind to him.  It's good that he's being remembered fondly this week for the noble service he gave to this country.

John Edwards '08

John Edwards is set to officially announce that he is running for president today.  His announcement will probably get buried under all the tributes to Ford.  (So why am I blogging about it?)   His One America site now reads "John Edwards '08" and  they've changed their mission statement so that it reads less like a high schooler's Communist manifesto.  (Darn.  I was going to make fun of it.)  Previously, it read something like:  There are two Americas, one where people at the top get everything they want and the other where everyone struggles just to get by.  Right, whatever.  I'd consider President Bush at the top, but I don't think he got everything he wanted last Nov. 7th.

Edwards is supposed to announce in New Orleans, The City That Bush Flooded.  Why not his home state of North Carolina?  Don't they want him anymore?

Edward's campaign isn't going to last past the New Hampshire primary and it's not going to withstand the HiIlary juggernaut, so why bother?

John Edwards to run in '08

John Edwards is running for President in 2008 and he expects us to vote for him - based on what exactly?

Based on:
1).  his long years of service in the Senate?  (That would be six (6) years)
2).  his many hard-fought campaigns for the office of Vice-President ?  (That would be one (1) campaign.)
3).  his 4 long years of self-promotion through his One America organization which may be an organization to help the poor, or may be the Elect John Edwards Committee (EJECt).

You decide.

And on top of that, he's a fraud!

Discovery returns

We can all breathe a sigh of relief.  The space shuttle, Discovery, made it back safely right before Christmas.  This mission put ISS construction and repair back on track.  But how long until the next NASA disaster stalls progress again?  The space shuttle program is far too bloated and expensive to really continue effectively.  By the time the ISS is finished it will be obsolete.  Wouldn't it be far better to contract private companies (who can do it cheaper and more efficiently) to build the ISS?
